Imperial Place is made up of a long, dead-end section that runs on to Grenfell Street and a smaller, dead-end section that runs off the larger section. This photo is of that smaller section.
Razor wire always gives me the creeps.

My first reaction to this was, "Good Lord! Poor J. Frank!"
But then if you look at it for a while - look around without judgement - it's kind of nice that this corner of the city (presumably quiet & out-of-the-way) is dedicated to a single named person, from all the billions who ever lived. It's his corner. Just the dedication itself makes it mean something.
The razor wire could do with a bypass though, agreed.
I'd all but forgotten about that shortcut until you mentioned it. I remember finding it one day and thinking 'I'll have to remember that for future shortcutting'. I hardly ever use those toilets though, which is probably why I'd forgotten.
I love taking shortcuts while in the city - this project has allowed me to find so many more. A lot of the alleyways and sidestreets don't allow for a shorter walking distance but they certainly can cut down on travel time. Well, they did until I started taking an interest in them. They are also especially handy for avoiding Christmas in the Mall...
(Pondering: when's the Sydney Test Match? Melbourne is Boxing Day, yes?...after Christmas?) Anyway, just the idea there's a shortcut via a toilet is enough to distract me. How wonderful. I hope it's a secret door or something? Mysterious and hidden?
kent, there's probably a metaphor in there somewhere: how many cleaners' closets do we all fail to open, just assuming they never lead out to the blue sky? Or maybe not...
Sparrow, are you familiar with a (presumably UK) artist called Banksy? His stuff has connections to your own, including stencils & still-life-with-bins.
kent: A few days ago, I realised that I was in fact unfamiliar with the shortcut through to Imperial Lane. I was thinking of the other toilets in City Cross that also have a door leading out into an alleyway. These toilets can be found on the Eastern side of City Cross (the Eastern and Western sides are divided by James Place). Went to the City Cross yesterday to check both toilets out but they are renovating the place like mad and both toilets are closed.
