James Place I

This place closed down a few years ago. I don’t know much about it but I always wish I could have gone inside for a coffee before it shut for good. Walking by occasionally, I’ve come to develop an image of it being a dark, cosy place, in a Greenwich Village/Bob Dylan sort of way. The kind of place that I wish we had in Adelaide, rather than all these franchise affairs that seem to be popping up all over the place.

it was dark and cosy. you got brewed coffee, and if you wanted it white it came with cream, not milk. there were free refills; you just helped yourself after that initial one. there were booths downstairs which would usual sit just two people; the seats were fixed and the back of the chairs were over head height when you sat down, so they were pretty private. it was a good place for conversations. there were newspapers to read on a special slanting reading table, with reading lights. and there was a little staircase to a tiny upstairs section too, where from memory there was one little booth and two bigger ones.

I can't believe this place is no more! It was THE place to go when I was at Adelaide Uni - they had chicken sandwiches to kill for (beautiful freshly steamed chicken, shredded and generously placed with lettuce and ground black pepper). I can still taste them in my mind thirty years later.

I'm loving reading through your blog - but saddened to see so much neglect of our history.

i spent pretty much every day after school here something about free refills seemed to attract alot of us. Shame it closed down. It was pretty dank and the chairs were in need of replacing and I'm pretty sure the guy sitting next to us is homeless. Ahh the memories.
